Saranda guide

Saranda (Sarandë) is a small town located in southern Albania, near the boundary with the northern part of Greece. It is a destination that in recent years has become fashionable in Albania due to the recent arrival of several cruise ships to its port.

A quiet city, well located, which always has something to do, with cafes and terraces open all year round and with a Mediterranean climate to enjoy its beaches. No wonder they chose it as a stopover for cruises on the Greek islands.

What to do in Saranda

The best thing to do in Saranda is to stroll along the extensive Bulevardi Hassan Tahsini on the seashore. Especially at night it is full of people and there are many open shops, restaurants, terraces, drinking places, street games ... On this boulevard is the Orthodox Church Shen Harrallambi; and in a parallel street the ruins of the 5th century synagogue.

Really in the city itself there is not much else to do, just enjoy the summer, the beach, its restaurants, low prices and the rhythm of night life. In the hills in the east of the city there are two attractions: one of them is the Monastery of Forty Saints, Byzantine and that gives its name to the city, but getting here is very complicated. The access is a dirt road, stony and narrow, by a neighborhood that did not convince us much, so we turned around halfway. The other attraction, and highly recommended, is to climb to the Castle Lekuresi, the sixteenth century. From here you get views of Saranda and its spectacular surroundings, and above all, it is an unbeatable place to enjoy a meal or a dinner.

The other great tourist attraction near Saranda is called "Blue Eye", in Albanian Syri i Kalter, although you will see it everywhere with its English name "The Blue Eye". This is a birth of water that makes it with an amazing shape: a hole over 45 meters deep where the hue of water becomes very blue, forming a pupil and an iris. Water flows from here and then forms a river of crystal clear water, in the middle of the Albanian forest. The water is very, very cold. The road to get here is dirt and you have to pay a guard to enter with the car. Before arriving, you can also take advantage and visit the Monastery of Mesopotam and San Nicolás de Bari.
